Origin of the Ragdoll

The Ragdoll originated in the 1960s in California, where breeder Ann Baker developed this unique breed. It all started with a white Angora cat named Josephine, known for her exceptionally calm temperament. Baker discovered that her kittens exhibited a relaxed, almost floppy behavior when picked up, which is characteristic of Ragdolls and the reason for their name (ragdoll literally means "rag doll").
Through careful crossbreeding between Josephine and other calm-natured cats, a new breed was developed, now known worldwide for its friendly and relaxed demeanor.

Colors and Patterns

Ragdolls are pointed cats. A pointed cat is one with a specific color pattern known as the "pointed" pattern. This means the cat has a light base color over most of its body, with darker colors on certain points, such as the ears, muzzle, legs, and tail. 
Ragdolls come in a variety of beautiful colors and patterns:

• Seal: Dark brown to black.
• Blue: A soft blue-gray color.
• Chocolate: A warm milk chocolate-brown shade.
• Lilac: A delicate light gray with a pinkish hue.
• Red: A warm, reddish color.
• Cream: A soft, creamy shade.
• Tortie: A mix of seal and red or blue and cream.
• Tabby (Lynx): Stripes in the points with a lighter body color. This can occur in all colors as an additional variation.
• Torbie: A mix of tortie and tabby.

In addition to the colors, Ragdolls can have different patterns, with the most common being:

• Colorpoint: Dark points on the ears, legs, tail, and face. A colorpoint has no white.
  
• Mitted: The colorpoint pattern with "white mittens" on the front paws, boots on the hind legs, a white chin, and a white belly stripe.
  
• Bicolor: Dark points combined with a white inverted "V" on the face, a white belly, and white legs.
  

Temperament

Ragdolls are known for their exceptional temperament. They are affectionate, friendly, and often follow their owner around the house. Despite their impressive size—they can grow quite large—they are surprisingly gentle. They have a calm personality and often allow themselves to be picked up without protest, relaxing like a ragdoll.

They are social and get along well with children, other cats, and even dogs. Their gentle nature makes them suitable for families and people looking for a calm, loving cat. Unlike some other breeds, Ragdolls are less prone to aggressive behavior and usually have a soft meow.

Another notable characteristic is their patience. They don’t mind sitting on your lap or being cuddled, making them ideal for people who like to spend a lot of time with their pet. Although they are playful, Ragdolls are not particularly energetic and are generally content with quiet activities.
